Here are the cabinet plans from Lowe's:
On this view, I really like the ending with the diagonal shelf. I thought I wanted a farm sink, but I think it will be too much with everything on this wall. Also, I was using my current cabinets as a basis for the new design. I didn't realize that I had 18" cabinets and the new cabinets would be 24"! Yes, this kept me up last night trying to figure this out! The tall end cabinet would be a utility cabinet where I can store a step ladder and the dog food, as well as some pantry items. I'll use the cabinet above this dishwasher for plates and glasses. It is tight between the sink and dishwasher but it is what I have today.
In the stove picture, I like the end cabinets again. They really finish things off. Just to the left of the sink, right of the oven, I had the option of adding a trash/recycle cabinet. Something like my friend Michyle's. I like that it would be right by the sink. The other option that I has was to use the lazy susan in the other corner as a trash area. This gives me three baskets: trash, recycle and compost. This is the closest drawer to the dish washer, so I'm not sure if I would put my silverware here or on the next wall.
This is shows how the cabinets will look when installed around the room. As I said above, in the corner is the lazy susan with the the various trash cans. The center is for pots/pans. Other than right by the sink, these are the only drawers. I could keep my silverware here or by the sink. This is one of my quandaries Any suggestions would be welcome!
This is what I'm really looking forward to! This is where my stove is today and I can't wait to have more storage! I'm adding another post where I'm asking for your feedback on views. Here is the inspiration for this layout:
Here are some other pictures that they gave me:

Hi Debbie -- How exciting! You are going to have a great adventure with many more ups and downs.
ReplyDeleteHere are some initial questions/comments based on my remodeling experience:
1. Do you really want wood? There are other options that won't be as impacted by water and you may want to consider that. I will be happy to show you in my kitchen the damage around the sink area where water will inevitably find its way to your lower and upper cabinets.
2. If you go with wood, try for as minimal a finish as possible, as it will peel off over time. I have a friend who just got pure maple with a clear coat which looks nice.
3. I am jealous of anyone with floor to ceiling pull-out pantry shelves. Not sure if your design includes them, but keep them in mind as they are life savers in organizing.
4. Broom closet area, storage for paper & plastic bags, cookbooks, etc. - this is always forgotten. Make sure you know where everything will go, even things that are not able to fit in your kitchen today (front hall closet & dining room stuff?)
5. Where are your dogs going to eat? You want to be sure it's designated in advance so the area can be properly configured.
6. You want your dishes, glasses and silverware storage to be very close to your dishwasher.
7. Put in as many upper cabinets as possible - you'll need the space.
8. Even if you don't get a farm sink, I highly recommend an extra deep sink with a pull out faucet/sprayer. I like my stainless steel sink, but my parents' white one is nice too. It just depends on what goes with your appliances - you generally want to match them but don't have to.
9. I regret that my stove is so far away from my sink - it's good to keep them close to avoid water and juice drops on floor when washing or transferring produce, meat, etc. for cooking.
10. Try to take a look at people's kitchens who have remodeled 5 years ago or more, just to see how things hold up.
11. Having more recycling space in that corner would be helpful, as long as you have storage for the kinds of big things that would normally go there - like big bowls, blender, food processor, etc.
12. Do you have someplace to store all your small appliances?
13. Make sure there's a big drawer near your stove for turners, spatulas, spoons, etc. You don't want to have a crock on top of the counter if you can avoid it.
14. Think about what you used your kitchen table and banquette for previously - the dumping ground for groceries, purchases, projects, etc. What are you going to do to meet those needs in this new kitchen?
OK - that's all I can think of right now. Let me know if you have any follow up.
